How do we categorise the hyper local media?

We use four internally designated categories to define the hyper local press. These are:

Tier one: Comprising parish magazines and similar titles, these are normally run by volunteers, are often printed on A5 paper and are usually mono. Circulations range from 200 to 500, with readership often substantially larger. They are particularly effective in reaching rural communities and are often used by franchised brands, such as supermarkets, and local businesses.

Tier two: These magazines are normally commercial propositions but are often still run by individuals rather than publishing houses. They are normally printed in A5 colour and have circulations from 2000 to 5000. Tier two titles are often the best target for hyper local advertising as they present an excellent combination of circulation and locally focussed content.

Tier three: Normally published by small publishing houses in A5 or A4 format and almost always in full colour, these titles have an average circulation of 5000 to 7000 and range in subject from local lifestyle to news and politics.

Tier four: We reserve this category for regional lifestyle magazines, often published and county level with glossy high quality paper stock by professional publishing houses.
